TLDR Testosterone increases hair growth and acne in transgender men.
This study evaluated the effects of testosterone on hair growth and acne in 90 transgender men, using control groups of 30 cisgender men and 30 cisgender women. The results showed that exogenous testosterone significantly increased the incidence of acne (52% in transgender men on testosterone vs. 9% not on testosterone) and hair growth, with higher Ferriman-Gallwey scores in transgender men on testosterone compared to cisgender women and transgender men not on testosterone, but lower than cisgender men. The duration of testosterone therapy was positively correlated with both hair growth and acne severity. The study emphasized the importance of dermatologists in managing these side effects to improve self-confidence and quality of life in transgender men.
