TLDR People with weakened immune systems, like those with SLE, are at higher risk for TB.
The case report described a 21-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who developed tuberculous lymphadenitis, a rare form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. Her compromised immune system, due to SLE and long-term immunosuppressive therapy, increased her susceptibility to TB. She presented with a 4 cm neck lump, which reduced to 2 cm after antituberculosis treatment. The report highlighted the importance of considering TB infection in SLE patients on high-dose steroid treatment, as they are at increased risk for infections like TB lymphadenitis, and emphasized the need for improved screening and preventive therapy for latent TB in such patients.
