TLDR Tabby mutations in mice affect hair follicle development and help study genetic mapping and certain medical conditions.
The tabby (Ta), tabby-c (Tac), and tabby-J (TaJ) mutations in mice were studied for their effects on hair follicle development, specifically noting the absence of secondary follicles while primary vibrissae remained unaffected. These mutations were instrumental in exploring the role of epidermal growth factor, particularly in the context of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia treatment. Additionally, they were utilized in genetic mapping on the X Chromosome, oogenesis studies, and as a double mutant with the gene for testicular feminization.
