TLDR High-dose vitamin D3 does not improve symptoms or quality of life in COVID-19 patients after one year.
This study investigated the long-term effects of a single high dose of vitamin D3 on persistent or new symptoms in 240 patients with moderate to severe COVID-19. After 1 year, no significant differences were found between the vitamin D3 and placebo groups in terms of persistent symptoms or quality of life. The study concluded that a single high dose of vitamin D3 did not significantly impact the persistence or onset of symptoms related to COVID-19 up to 1 year after hospital discharge. Notably, there was a trend toward greater hair loss (telogen effluvium) in the placebo group, suggesting further research is needed to explore the potential benefits of intermediate or fractionated doses of vitamin D3.
