TLDR COVID-19 may cause hair loss due to infection stress or treatments.
The study from Henry Ford Health System reviewed the records of 552 patients diagnosed with COVID-19, identifying 10 patients (mean age 48.5 years, 90% female) with Telogen effluvium (TE) linked to the infection. The onset of hair shedding occurred on average 50 days after initial COVID-19 symptoms. Most of these patients had received treatments such as antibiotics, systemic corticosteroids, or hydroxychloroquine, and 70% were hospitalized. The findings suggest that COVID-19 may trigger TE due to infection-related stress, but it also notes that medications or the overall pandemic stress could contribute. Further studies are needed to explore the long-term effects and prognosis of TE post-COVID-19.
