TLDR A special clotrimazole varnish cured a siamang's persistent skin infection after 3 months.
In November 2004, an adult male siamang at The Tisch Family Zoological Gardens in Jerusalem presented with dermatophytosis caused by Microsporum canis, characterized by alopecia and hyperkeratosis. Initial treatments with various antifungal agents resolved most lesions, but one persistent lesion remained. An experimental sustained-release clotrimazole varnish was applied, leading to the lesion's resolution 3 months later, 2 years after the onset of symptoms. This case highlighted the benefit of minimizing treatment frequency in exotic animals.
