TLDR Lower survivin levels in blood are linked to more severe and progressing alopecia areata.
This study investigated the serum level of survivin in 38 patients with alopecia areata (AA) compared to 38 healthy controls. Results showed that AA patients had significantly lower serum survivin levels than controls (p=0.009), with even lower levels in those with progressive disease compared to stable disease (p<0.001). A significant negative correlation was found between survivin levels and both AA severity (p<0.001) and duration (p=0.003). The findings suggest that survivin may play a role in the immune pathogenesis of AA and that its serum level could serve as a predictor for the severity and progression of the disease.

Minoxidil helps hair growth by increasing blood flow and prolonging the growth phase, but it doesn't address the root cause of hair loss, such as DHT sensitivity. Finasteride can help maintain some gains by blocking DHT, but stopping Minoxidil often leads to hair loss because the new hairs are dependent on it.
