TLDR Cationic and nonionic surfactants provide better color intensity and resistance for semi-permanent hair dye than anionic surfactants.
The study investigated the effect of surfactant type on the dyeability and color resistance of semi-permanent basic hair dyes using Basic Brown 16 pigment. It found that dyes formulated with anionic surfactants produced significantly lower color strength and resistance compared to those with cationic or nonionic surfactants. After 10 shampoo washes, hair dyed with anionic dye showed higher color change, indicating lower color resistance. The results suggested that cationic or nonionic surfactants are better choices for hair dye formulations. Additionally, alkaline shampoos caused more color change than acidic or neutral shampoos. The study concluded that basic hair dyes with cationic or nonionic surfactants provide better color retention and can be a good alternative to permanent hair dyes, especially for covering grey hair.
