Sublingual Minoxidil Increases Fiber Diameter in Male Androgenetic Alopecia: A Proxy for Reversal of Hair Follicle Miniaturization

TLDR Sublingual minoxidil increases hair thickness in men with hair loss.

A study investigated the effects of low-dose sublingual minoxidil (SLM) on hair fibre diameter in 33 men with male androgenetic alopecia (MAGA) over 24 weeks. Using TrichoLAB® H2H analysis, the study found that SLM increased hair fibre diameter in a dose-dependent manner, with the most significant increases observed at doses of 1.35mg and 4.05mg. The increase was particularly notable in intermediate and thickest hairs, suggesting a reversal of hair follicle miniaturization. In contrast, those on placebo experienced a decrease in fibre diameter. The findings support the potential of SLM as a treatment for MAGA by increasing hair fibre diameter and reversing miniaturization.
