TLDR Patients with Focal Dermal Hypoplasia often experience skin, nail, hair, and bone issues, and may benefit from calcium and vitamin D supplements.
This cross-sectional study investigated the prevalence and progression of skin, hair, nail, and bone disease in patients with Focal Dermal Hypoplasia (FDH) by surveying 17 participants at a conference. All participants reported skin and nail involvement, with 12 experiencing scalp/hair issues. Common triggers for skin flares included illness, weather changes, stress, and exercise. Notably, 11 participants observed skin disease progression, with 9 developing new papillomas. Bone issues were also reported, with 3 children experiencing multiple fractures and 1 confirmed case of osteoporosis. The study suggested that clinicians should counsel patients on potential disease progression and consider calcium and vitamin D supplementation, as well as bone density studies. It also emphasized the need for dermatologists to conduct thorough reviews and refer patients to specialists as needed.
