TLDR EMTV news harms nation-building in Papua New Guinea by promoting Western values and negative stories, creating a biased and divisive cultural image.
The study explored the role of television news in Papua New Guinea's nation-building process through the encoding/decoding model, focusing on EMTV news. It involved in-depth interviews with four journalists and surveys with 135 student audiences. The research concluded that EMTV news negatively impacted nation-building by emphasizing Western news values and negative stories, which fostered a negative image of the country. The news reports were biased in cultural representation, failing to unify the country's diverse cultures, and instead reinforced provincial identities among student audiences.
