TLDR Women have unique stroke risks due to hormones, contraceptives, pregnancy, and menopause.
The document reviewed studies identifying stroke risk factors unique to women, emphasizing the influence of sex hormones, reproductive history, and hormonal contraceptive use. Elevated estradiol and low dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate levels were linked to increased ischemic stroke risk in postmenopausal women. Early menarche, early menopause, hormone replacement therapy, pregnancy, and the postpartum period were significant risk factors. The findings highlighted the need for gender-specific strategies in stroke prevention and management, including tailored healthcare guidelines for women.
