TLDR Monitoring steroid hormones in blood can better detect testosterone doping.
The study aimed to identify novel serum biomarkers for testosterone (T) doping through untargeted steroidomics. Using ultra high-performance liquid chromatography and high-resolution mass spectrometry, researchers monitored endogenous steroid metabolites in serum samples from a T administration clinical trial. A three-step workflow and multifactorial data analysis highlighted promising biomarkers. Longitudinal monitoring of these compounds suggested that serum steroidomics could significantly improve the detection of T abuse. The study was supported by the Partnership for Clean Competition Research Collaborative and the Swiss National Science Foundation, with ethical approval and informed consent obtained for all human subjects involved.
