TLDR A new method accurately measures long-term hormone levels in hair.
The study developed a new LC-MS/MS-based method for identifying concentrations of seven steroid hormones in human hair, offering improved specificity, sensitivity, and reproducibility over traditional immunochemical assays. This method allowed for the simultaneous measurement of cortisol, cortisone, testosterone, progesterone, corticosterone, DHEA, and androstendione, with detection limits ranging from 0.1 to 9.0 pg/mg and linear ranges up to 1000 pg/mg. The findings suggested that this approach could enhance the accuracy of psychoneuroendocrinological research by providing a reliable retrospective assessment of long-term hormone secretion.

community No, Finasteride as a treatment for MPB was not an "accident"

      in Research/Science  108 upvotes 4 years ago
Finasteride was intentionally developed to treat BPH and later approved for male pattern baldness (MPB) due to its 5AR inhibition effects. The delay in MPB approval was due to concerns about off-label use for female hirsutism and the prioritization of treating a more debilitating condition.

community risks with finasteride and dutasteride

      in Research/Science  141 upvotes 5 months ago
Finasteride and dutasteride have potential risks, including post-finasteride syndrome, but are commonly used for hair loss. RU58841, minoxidil, and needling are suggested as alternatives, though all treatments carry risks.

community Why hasn’t anyone made a "DHT sponge" biologic yet???

      in Research/Science  45 upvotes 3 weeks ago
The conversation discusses the potential for developing a biologic "DHT sponge" to neutralize DHT in the bloodstream as a treatment for hair loss, suggesting it could be more targeted and have fewer side effects than current treatments like finasteride and dutasteride. Concerns include the complexity, cost, and potential side effects of such a treatment, as well as skepticism about its feasibility and market interest.

community Testosterone and hair loss seeming irrelevance

      in Research/Science  82 upvotes 2 years ago
The conversation is about the role of testosterone in hair loss and the effectiveness of different treatments. The conclusion is that DHT is the main culprit for hair loss, and finasteride has been proven to work long-term in maintaining and regrowing hair. Testosterone may have a minor effect, but it is not the primary cause of hair loss.

community Trying to understand finasteride side effects and post finasteride syndrome

      in Finasteride/Dutasteride  70 upvotes 5 years ago
The conversation discusses the side effects of finasteride, including low libido and erectile dysfunction, and the possibility of these effects being permanent, known as post-finasteride syndrome (PFS). Some users report personal experiences with PFS and debate whether the condition is real, with varying opinions on the reversibility of side effects and the role of individual biology.
