TLDR Stem cell therapy shows promise for hair loss treatment, but more research is needed to confirm its effectiveness.
The document from 2019 discussed the potential of stem cell therapy for treating hair loss disorders like alopecia. It highlighted that hair follicles contain hair follicular stem cells (HFSCs) which remain unaltered even when hair loss occurs, making stem cell treatments a promising option. The paper reviewed 24 studies out of 849, showing promising results with various types of stem cells in promoting hair growth and follicle regeneration. However, more research was needed to improve cell viability and establish effective treatment protocols. The document also discussed a new therapy using cord blood-derived multipotent stem cells (CB-SCs) which showed improved hair regrowth and quality of life in patients with severe alopecia areata. The authors concluded that stem cell regeneration for nonautoimmune hair loss is feasible, but more studies are needed to establish the efficacy of various stem cell-based treatments for hair loss.
