TLDR Dried blood spots can be as stable as frozen liquid samples for storing certain metabolites.
The study evaluated the stability of glucuronide metabolites in dried blood spots (DBS) compared to liquid samples stored at -80°C. Results indicated that under ambient conditions, the stability of glucuronides in DBS was equivalent to that of the liquid samples. The research emphasized that the decision to use DBS technology should be made on a case-by-case basis, considering the specific metabolism characteristics of the compounds and the clinical study design. The study was supported by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), and all authors were GSK employees at the time. Ethical guidelines were followed, and informed consent was obtained from human subjects involved.
