TLDR Sox13 is a new marker for early hair follicle development and differentiation.
The study investigated the role of Sox13, a transcription factor, in hair follicle development using Sox13-LacZ-knock-in mice. Sox13 was found to be expressed in the epithelial portion of the placode at E14.5 and later in the hair germ and hair peg during morphogenesis. In postnatal hair development, Sox13 was predominantly expressed in the outer root sheath. Despite this expression pattern, Sox13LacZ/LacZ mice showed normal integumentary structures, indicating that Sox13 was not essential for epidermal and adnexal development. However, Sox13 served as a novel marker for early hair follicle development and differentiation.
