TLDR The meeting covered new findings in children's skin conditions and treatments, including the benefits of super absorbent polymer diapers.
At the 12th annual meeting of the Society for Pediatric Dermatology in 1987, various topics were discussed, including treatments for herpesvirus infections and graft-versus-host disease, the impact of cytokines on immunodeficiency, endocrine issues in children, managing atopic eczema, and a syndrome linking erythroderma, failure to thrive, and diarrhea with immunodeficiency. Dr. Atherton presented cases involving infants with erythroderma and immunodeficiency, while Dr. Hurwitz updated on new findings in pediatric dermatology such as pediatric AIDS, intrauterine parvovirus infections, and potential risks associated with minoxidil. Dr. Leyden's study of 150 infants showed that diapers with super absorbent polymer were better at reducing skin hydration, skin pH, and diaper dermatitis compared to conventional paper diapers. Additionally, Dr. Birchall discussed research on epidermal cytokines funded by the Society for Pediatric Dermatology.
