TLDR Celebrity endorsements can greatly increase interest in cosmetic procedures.
The study investigates the impact of social media, particularly Kim Kardashian's 2013 Instagram post, on the popularity of the vampire facial, a cosmetic procedure involving microneedling with platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Using Google Trends data from 2010 to 2020, the researchers observed a significant spike in search interest for "vampire facial" and "blood facial" following Kardashian's post, with the Interest Over Time (IOT) reaching 100 in March 2013. This trend was not limited to the U.S. but spread globally, with notable search increases in the UK, Ireland, Australia, South Africa, and Nigeria. The study concludes that celebrity endorsements can significantly boost consumer interest and drive the adoption and development of medical aesthetic procedures.
