TLDR Silk fibroin shows promise for wound care but faces challenges in becoming widely available.
Silk fibroin (SF) and its nanocomposites are highlighted as promising biomaterials for wound care due to their potent wound-healing activity. The review discusses the challenges in wound healing, particularly in developing countries where cost affects treatment accessibility. It examines the use of SF in various hemostatic formats and its role in addressing prolonged inflammation and infections in nonhealing wounds. Despite their excellent pro-healing properties, few silk-based products are commercially available. The review concludes by identifying the obstacles in bringing these products to market and discusses future prospects for their development.
