TLDR Women with telogen effluvium have lower levels of VEGF, which may contribute to their hair loss.
The study "Evaluation of Serum Levels of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) in Female Patients with Telogen Effluvium" conducted in 2018 involved 40 women with telogen effluvium, a form of non-scarring diffuse hair loss, and 40 healthy women as controls. The researchers measured the serum VEGF concentrations in these women using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The results showed that the serum levels of VEGF were lower in the women with telogen effluvium compared to the healthy controls. This suggests that VEGF, a growth factor that stimulates angiogenesis and promotes hair growth, may play a role in the pathogenesis of telogen effluvium.
