TLDR Men with hair loss don't necessarily have higher levels of the hormone DHEA-S, but this hormone tends to decrease with age.
The study, conducted 18 years ago, aimed to determine the serum-levels of Dehydroepyandrosterone-sulfate (DHEA-S) in 44 men (37 with androgenetic alopecia (AA) and 7 healthy controls) aged 19 to 55. The hormone levels were measured using a standard radioimmunoassay. The results showed that only nine of the men with AA had high levels of DHEA-S, and no correlation was found between the clinical stage of AA and DHEA-S levels. However, a relationship was observed between increasing age and decreasing concentrations of DHEA-S. Contrary to previous studies, this investigation did not find an elevation of DHEA-S in men with AA. The findings indirectly support the importance of certain follicular enzymes that could increase the amount of alternative DHT-sources in AA, as well as the theory for the "endocrinology of hair follicle".
