TLDR A topical treatment safely and effectively reduced acne by causing targeted cell death in sebaceous glands without side effects.
The study from 2010 investigated a topical liposome-encapsulated 5-α-reductase inhibitor, 4-MA, as a treatment for acne. It found that 4-MA effectively induced apoptosis in the sebaceous glands of hamster flank organs, reducing gland size and demonstrating selective efficacy without systemic side effects. The TUNEL method confirmed the selectivity of apoptosis, with many apoptotic cells in treated glands but few in surrounding tissues. The treatment did not affect hair follicles, melanin spots, internal organs, body weight, or testosterone/DHT ratios after 6 weeks. These results suggest that liposome 4-MA could be a safe and effective treatment for acne and potentially other androgen-dependent conditions.

The conversation discusses the potential of long-chain unsaturated fatty acids, like oleic and linoleic acid, as an additional treatment for hair loss, which may inhibit the enzyme responsible for converting testosterone to DHT and promote hair growth. Users humorously suggest using oils topically and discuss other hair loss treatments, but the main focus is on the science behind fatty acids and their role in hair health.

community Fresh off the press: Dutasteride may cause chronic infertility

      in Research/Science  643 upvotes 5 months ago
Dutasteride may cause chronic infertility by reducing semen volume and motility, with concerns about irreversible prostate fibrosis. Users consider switching to finasteride or using treatments like minoxidil and microneedling, weighing hair preservation against fertility.

A 19-year-old with rapid hair loss since 16 is considering a hair transplant but refuses to take finasteride or any 5α-Reductase inhibitors. They are currently using minoxidil, tretinoin, and microneedling with a Derminator 2, and only want hair until age 27.

community Is finasteride better than dutasteride?

      in Finasteride/Dutasteride  31 upvotes 2 weeks ago
Dutasteride reduces DHT more effectively than finasteride, but finasteride is more commonly used and approved for hair loss. Users have mixed opinions on dutasteride's effectiveness, with some experiencing better results and others facing side effects or no improvement.
