TLDR COVID-19 may worsen symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
This review investigates the impact of SARS-CoV-2 on patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), highlighting that the virus may exacerbate BPH symptoms by attaching to the ACE2 receptor in the prostate, potentially causing direct harm and accelerating BPH development. The infection may be androgen-mediated, worsening BPH symptoms and triggering pro-inflammatory pathways that increase cytokine release, leading to inflammation and exacerbation of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Additionally, COVID-19-related metabolic disturbances, such as diabetes and cardiovascular issues, may contribute to BPH. The study emphasizes the need to identify factors that worsen BPH-related LUTS post-COVID-19 recovery to better understand these changes.
