TLDR Ongoing monitoring and treatment are crucial to manage sarcoptic mange in reintroduced red foxes.
The study examines sarcoptic mange in reintroduced red foxes in South Korea, identifying 27 cases from 2019 to 2024. Among 15 rescued foxes, 12 recovered after treatment with ivermectin or fluralaner, while 3 died. The study found significant blood parameter differences in infected foxes, such as leukocytosis and anemia, and necropsies revealed skin lesions like alopecia and hyperkeratosis. The research underscores the need for ongoing monitoring and treatment to support the health and survival of reintroduced fox populations, marking the first report of such infections in South Korea.
