TLDR Minoxidil may help with hair regrowth and disease stabilization in scarring alopecia, but side effects vary, needing more research for consistent safety and effectiveness.
The review evaluates the safety and efficacy of topical minoxidil (TM) and low-dose oral minoxidil (LDOM) in treating scarring alopecia. The study analyzed various studies on the use of TM and LDOM in central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, frontal fibrosing alopecia, lichen planopilaris, and traction alopecia. The results showed mixed outcomes, with most participants experiencing benefits in terms of disease stabilization and hair regrowth. The treatments were generally well-tolerated, although some side effects were reported. Despite the positive indications, the variability in results and reported side effects highlight the need for further research to establish consistent efficacy and safety profiles for TM and LDOM in treating scarring alopecia.

Topical minoxidil being a difficult product to apply, with users considering finasteride, RU58841, and oral minoxidil as alternative treatments for diffuse thinning hair. Other advice includes shaving the head in the first 3 months of using minoxidil and finding ways to apply it without saturating the hair.
