TLDR Most Indian men aged 50-55 have a safe area for hair transplants, but selection should be careful to avoid overharvesting.
In 2020, a study was conducted to profile and grade the pattern of receding hair in the occipital donor area among 681 Indian men aged 50-55 years with androgenetic alopecia. The researchers analyzed and photographed the occipital donor areas and graded the hair loss. According to their scale, 78% of the occipital donor areas were graded 1, 2, or 3 and met the standard safe donor area (SDA) criteria, while 22% did not fit well into the standard SDA grading scale. They also observed diffuse thinning and/or reverse thinning of the occipital donor area. The study concluded that there is no universally applicable SDA, thus selection should be conservative and overharvesting of the occipital donor region should be avoided.
