TLDR Rosemary oil and minoxidil 2% both effectively increase hair count in people with androgenetic alopecia, but rosemary oil causes less scalp itching.
In a randomized comparative trial conducted in 2014, 100 patients with androgenetic alopecia (AGA) were treated with either rosemary oil (n=50) or minoxidil 2% (n=50) for a period of 6 months. No significant change in hair count was observed in either group at the 3-month mark. However, both groups experienced a significant increase in hair count at the 6-month endpoint compared to the baseline and 3-month endpoint. There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of hair count at either the 3-month or 6-month mark. Scalp itching was significantly higher in both groups compared to the baseline, but it was more frequent in the minoxidil group. The study concluded that rosemary oil was effective in the treatment of AGA, with similar efficacy to minoxidil 2% but with less scalp itching.
