TLDR Managing malignant ureteral obstruction is challenging and requires personalized treatment to protect kidney function and patient health.
The review discussed malignant ureteral obstruction (MUO), a critical condition often associated with late-stage cancers, which required immediate intervention to preserve renal function. Nephrostomy was identified as the most effective method, achieving nearly 100% success in alleviating external compressive obstructions, while ureteral stents were less reliable, particularly for extrinsic obstructions. The review underscored the importance of rapid diagnosis and treatment, despite the lack of randomized clinical data to inform treatment choices. It emphasized individualized treatment plans and patient involvement in decision-making, highlighting the need to manage post-obstructive diuresis to prevent severe complications.
