TLDR Research on non-muscle invasive bladder cancer has increased, with the U.S. leading, and highlights effective treatments like BCG despite some side effects.
The bibliometric analysis of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) research from 2001 to 2022 showed a significant increase in publications, particularly after 2018, with the United States leading in contributions. The study highlighted the importance of collaboration, noting limited cooperation despite key institutions like Radboud University Nijmegen and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center being central to research efforts. Key research topics included pathological staging, clinical diagnosis, and treatment, with white light cystoscopy and photodynamic therapy identified as significant modalities. The study emphasized the efficacy of intravesical instillation, particularly with BCG, in reducing recurrence rates, despite some adverse effects. It also noted the high quality of NMIBC research and suggested future research directions, while acknowledging limitations such as potential research bias and language restrictions.
