Variability of Retail Pricing of Generic Urologic Medications in a Major US Metropolitan Area

Perry Xu, Justin M. Barnes, Emily Choe, Johar R. Syed, Sameer Siddiqui
TLDR Generic urologic medication prices vary by pharmacy type, not by location or income level.
The study investigated retail pricing for generic urologic medications across 51 zip codes in the St. Louis metropolitan area, considering pharmacy type, geography, and median income. Data from 152 chain and 16 independent pharmacies showed that pricing did not vary based on geography or income. However, independent pharmacies had significantly lower prices for tamsulosin 0.4mg and oxybutynin ER 5mg and 10mg compared to chain pharmacies. The study concluded that while there was wide variability in retail pricing, it was not influenced by geographic or income factors, but rather by the type of pharmacy.
