TLDR Dutasteride, fesoterodine, and finasteride are beneficial for older patients, while most other drugs should be used cautiously or avoided.
The study systematically reviewed the appropriateness of oral drugs for long-term treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in older adults, using the FORTA classification system. It found that no drugs were indispensable (FORTA A), but dutasteride, fesoterodine, and finasteride were beneficial (FORTA B) due to their efficacy and lack of significant side effects. Most drugs, particularly α-blockers and antimuscarinics, were rated as requiring caution (FORTA C) or advised against (FORTA D) due to potential adverse effects like cardiovascular risks. The study emphasized the need for more targeted research on drug safety and efficacy in the elderly population.
