TLDR JAK inhibitors partially restore scalp bacteria balance in alopecia areata patients.
This study investigated the scalp microbiota in alopecia areata (AA) patients compared to healthy controls, using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The study involved 27 AA patients and 4 healthy controls, with AA patients showing an altered ratio of gram-positive to gram-negative bacteria and increased abundance of certain bacterial genera. After 52 weeks of treatment with JAK inhibitors, most microbiota variations were restored, except for Proteobacteriota. These changes were consistent regardless of patient demographics or drug type. The findings highlight the role of scalp microbiota in AA and suggest that JAK inhibitors may influence the skin microbiome, offering insights for personalized AA treatments.
