TLDR Resistance exercise helps improve muscle protein balance disrupted by finasteride.
The study conducted 5 years ago investigated the effects of 8-week finasteride treatment and resistance exercise on protein synthesis and autophagic degradation in rat skeletal muscle. Forty-eight male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into four groups: sedentary control, finasteride, exercise, and exercise plus finasteride. The results showed that finasteride treatment significantly reduced protein synthesis while activating autophagic degradation in skeletal muscle. Resistance exercise increased both protein synthesis and autophagic degradation. However, the combined treatments decreased both protein synthesis and autophagy flux in the skeletal muscle. The study concluded that finasteride treatment appears to disrupt protein homeostasis in skeletal muscle, and resistance exercise seems to alleviate this disruption.
