TLDR Adding amino acids to damaged hair can improve its strength and appearance.
The study from 2005 investigated the loss and replenishment of amino acids in damaged hair. It was found that 6 key amino acids are significantly depleted during the weathering process due to mechanical, photochemical, and chemical damage. Using deuterium labeling and scanning focused ion beam analysis, researchers demonstrated that these amino acids could be reintroduced into the hair shaft through cosmetic treatments, particularly leave-in treatments. The reintroduction of amino acids was shown to increase with higher concentrations and more frequent applications, leading to improved tensile strength and overall hair health, including better appearance and reduced breakage.
