TLDR Severe hypothyroidism can cause temporary liver and kidney issues, which improve with thyroxine treatment.
The document reported on two pediatric cases of severe hypothyroidism presenting with hepatic and renal dysfunction. In both cases, the patients exhibited significantly elevated TSH levels and low Free T4, alongside abnormal liver and kidney function tests. Upon treatment with thyroxine, these abnormalities resolved within 6 weeks. The study highlighted that severe hypothyroidism could lead to transient hepatic and renal dysfunction, which improved with levothyroxine treatment. The delayed diagnosis of hypothyroidism was suggested to have contributed to these transient dysfunctions.
