P62 Drug-Induced Hypothyroidism in Patients Receiving Treatment for Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis

    The study reported on five cases of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) treatment, where four patients developed hypothyroidism, marking the largest cohort at the time to experience this adverse effect. The patients, primarily from iodine-deficient regions, were treated with regimens containing p-aminosalicylic acid (PAS) and Prothionamide. Symptoms included lethargy, goitre, and hair loss. The study concluded that individuals from iodine-deficient areas were more likely to develop drug-induced hypothyroidism and recommended monitoring thyroid function tests (TFTs) in patients undergoing prolonged treatment with these drugs.
