TLDR Preservative-free latanoprost effectively lowers eye pressure with fewer side effects.
The RELIEF study evaluated the tolerability and efficacy of preservative-free latanoprost in the treatment of glaucoma or ocular hypertension. The study found that preservative-free latanoprost was non-inferior in terms of intraocular pressure-lowering efficacy compared to benzalkonium chloride-latanoprost, with a better tolerability profile. Patients reported fewer ocular signs and symptoms, such as pain, discomfort, and dry eyes, with preservative-free latanoprost compared to benzalkonium chloride-latanoprost. The study concluded that preservative-free latanoprost may be a viable option for patients who experience adverse effects from benzalkonium chloride-preserved eye drops.
