TLDR Adding 2% glycerin or hyaluronic acid to permanent wave treatments reduces hair damage, with hyaluronic acid being more effective.
This study evaluated the effects of adding 2% glycerin or 2% hyaluronic acid to permanent wave treatments on hair damage. Measurements of hair thickness, tensile strength, moisture content, and optical density were taken. Results showed that hair treated with permanent wave reductants containing 2% glycerin or 2% hyaluronic acid had less damage, with increased thickness, tensile strength, and moisture content, and reduced optical density compared to hair treated without these additives. The order of hair damage was highest in the control group, followed by the glycerin group, and lowest in the hyaluronic acid group. Thus, adding 2% glycerin or hyaluronic acid to permanent wave treatments was effective in reducing hair damage, with hyaluronic acid being more effective than glycerin. Further research on optimal concentrations is recommended.
