TLDR Trichofolliculoma should be considered in children with scalp nodules for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
This case report discusses a rare instance of trichofolliculoma (TF), a benign skin tumour derived from hair follicle structures, in a nine-year-old boy. TF is uncommon in children and can be mistaken for other lesions like dermoid or epidermoid cysts. The boy presented with a solitary, asymptomatic nodule on the scalp, which showed specific dermoscopic features such as a central white plug of hair and dilated blood vessels. Surgical excision and histological analysis confirmed the TF diagnosis. The report emphasizes the importance of considering TF in paediatric scalp nodules and highlights the role of dermoscopy and histopathology in ensuring accurate diagnosis and treatment, thus preventing misdiagnosis and unnecessary procedures.
