TLDR Prompt veterinary care and proper diagnosis are crucial for treating rare fungal skin diseases in horses.
This study reported a rare case of Geotricum spp dermatitis in an 11-year-old saddle horse, which initially presented with non-pruritic alopecia after surgery and antibiotic treatment. The condition worsened over a month, with extensive alopecia, skin lesions, and systemic symptoms like lethargy and fever. Initial treatments with corticosteroids and antibiotics were ineffective. Fungal infection was confirmed through microscopic examination and culture, identifying Geotricum candidum. Treatment involved stable disinfection, antifungal baths, and dietary supplements, leading to significant improvement after three weeks. The study highlighted the importance of prompt veterinary consultation and appropriate diagnostics in cases of dermatitis, especially when corticosteroids or antibiotics are used long-term.
