TLDR Prompt veterinary care and accurate diagnosis are crucial for effectively treating rare fungal dermatitis in horses.
The case report detailed a rare instance of generalized Geotrichum candidum dermatitis in a horse, which developed after surgery and antibiotic treatment. Initially misdiagnosed as an allergic reaction, the condition worsened with corticosteroid treatment. The horse exhibited symptoms such as non-pruritic alopecia, lethargy, and fever. Accurate diagnosis through mycological analysis confirmed the fungal infection. Treatment involved stable disinfection, antifungal solutions, and antioxidant supplementation, leading to significant improvement within three weeks, including new hair growth and normalized health parameters. The study emphasized the importance of accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment to prevent prolonged suffering in equine fungal dermatitis cases.
