TLDR Finasteride can reliably cause hypospadias in rabbits.
The study aimed to establish a rabbit model of hypospadias induced by finasteride to explore the molecular mechanisms of the condition's etiology. Forty pregnant New Zealand rabbits were divided into five groups, each receiving finasteride at different gestation days. The results showed varying incidences of hypospadias, with the highest occurrence in groups C (95.5%), D (85.2%), and E (100%). Additionally, retained testicles were observed in groups C (36.4%), D (40.7%), and E (73.3%). The study concluded that the finasteride-induced hypospadias model in rabbits was stable, providing a reliable basis for further research.
