Quantitative Determination of Cosmetic Active and Care Substances on Hair

    Jan Ungewiß
TLDR Active agents mainly stay on the hair surface after short washes.
The study aimed to develop analytical methods to better understand the mechanisms of hair treatment with cosmetic formulations, focusing on the efficacy of active agents remaining on hair post-treatment. Using LC/MS and LC/MS/MS, the study quantified various active agents, such as Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Polyquaternium-10, and examined their adsorption behavior. It found that hair swelling does not occur significantly during short washes, meaning active agents mainly adsorb on the hair surface. The study also explored how treatment parameters like water flow rate, temperature, and hair damage affect substantivity. The findings provided insights for developing more effective hair care products.
