TLDR People with Behçet's disease can develop life-threatening lung artery aneurysms that may require surgery.
In 1999, a letter to the editor in the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology presented a case of a 30-year-old man with Behçet's disease (BD) who developed a pulmonary arterial aneurysm. BD is a multisystemic disorder that can involve the vascular system, and pulmonary involvement has a poor prognosis. The patient had a history of thrombophlebitis and presented with symptoms consistent with BD, including recurrent oral and genital ulcerations, arthritis, uveitis, and a positive pathergy test. Despite medical therapy, the patient experienced massive hemoptysis due to a pulmonary aneurysm and refused surgical intervention, leading to his death two months later. The letter emphasized that pulmonary arterial aneurysms are rare but have a high mortality rate in BD patients, and that surgical treatment is often necessary, especially in cases with hemoptysis. The authors concluded that BD requires the attention of various specialists due to its multisystemic nature and the potential for serious complications such as arterial aneurysm.
