TLDR 18% of COVID-19 survivors experience PTSD, with risk factors including age, gender, smoking, and lung damage.
This meta-analysis, involving 1,426 patients across seven studies, found that 18% of COVID-19 patients experienced post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after hospital discharge, indicating significant psychological effects beyond physical recovery. Identified risk factors for PTSD included older age, female gender, smoking, and extensive lung involvement. The study underscored the necessity for mental health support and interventions for COVID-19 survivors to enhance their long-term prognosis and quality of life. It also called for further research to confirm these findings and investigate additional risk factors, such as obesity.
