TLDR Women with PCOS often experience mental health issues like depression and anxiety.
Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) have a higher prevalence of psychiatric disorders, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and eating disorders, affecting up to 40% of this group. The complex relationship between PCOS and mental health is influenced by factors such as hormonal imbalances, neuroendocrine and neurotransmitter dysfunctions, and the gut-brain axis. Obesity and insulin resistance, common in PCOS, further exacerbate both reproductive and psychological symptoms. Despite the socio-economic impact, research on these connections is limited, highlighting the need for comprehensive mental health screening and multidisciplinary treatment approaches for women with PCOS. More research is necessary to establish clear pathophysiological links and effective treatments.
