TLDR Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) may increase hair density and thickness in Androgenetic Alopecia, but it's not significantly better than a placebo.
This scoping review assessed the effectiveness of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) in treating Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA) by analyzing randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published between 2016 and 2023. The review included 8 articles and found that PRP treatment resulted in a statistically significant increase in hair density, thickness, and anagen phase when compared to baseline measurements. However, these improvements were not significant when compared to a placebo group. Despite the lack of significant differences from the placebo, patients reported positive subjective responses. The review concluded that while PRP contains growth factors that may promote hair growth and improve blood circulation to hair follicles, the evidence from RCTs is limited. Further research is necessary to definitively determine the correlation between PRP treatment and hair growth outcomes in AGA patients.
