TLDR PRP is a promising treatment for autoimmune hair loss but its exact workings are not fully understood.
The 2018 document discussed the use of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) in treating alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition causing hair loss. It was noted that PRP, primarily used for androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata, increases the proliferation of epidermal and hair follicle bulge cells, as indicated by the Ki-67 marker. The paper also mentioned molecular pathways like ERK signalling, WNT b-catenin pathway, and Akt signalling activity involved in this process. However, the exact mechanisms and molecular signalling pathways were largely unknown at that time. The paper concluded that PRP's role in hair restoration was an active and interesting field of study.
