TLDR Topical 0.1% tacrolimus significantly improved ear infections in cats.
Proliferative and necrotizing otitis externa in cats was a rare condition of unknown cause, diagnosed in three adult domestic shorthair cats and one kitten. The cats exhibited large plaques and thick exudate in their ears, leading to secondary infections. Despite various treatments, the condition persisted until histopathological diagnosis revealed specific changes in hair follicles. Treatment with topical 0.1% tacrolimus led to marked improvement in all adult cats, with complete resolution in two cases, one with tacrolimus alone and another with additional oral prednisolone.
